NIGPAS Research Professor Zhu Maoyan was Elected Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

On November 21, the results of the 2025 academician election of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) were officially announced. Professor Zhu Maoyan from the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, CAS (NIGPAS) was named a new CAS academician.

Prof. Zhu is a Foreign Member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Germany, and an Honorary Fellow of the Geological Society of London. He currently serves as Chair of the Subcommission on Cryogenian of the International Commission on Stratigraphy, Editor-in-Chief of Global and Planetary Changeand Journal of Stratigraphy, as well as Associate Editor-in-Chief of Science China: Earth Sciences.

Prof. Zhu, a leading expert in the early evolution of complex life, the Cambrian Explosion, Neoproterozoic-Cambrian stratigraphy, and the co-evolution of Earth and life systems, has directed numerous national and international research initiatives, such as China's National Basic Research Program (973 Program). His influential work has earned broad global recognition, with more than 300 publications (including 20 in top journals such as Nature, Science, and PNAS), alongside four monographs and 18 edited conference volumes. His discoveries have been honored among Science’s Top 10 Scientific Breakthroughs of 2024, as well as China’s Top 10 Basic Research News, Top 10 Advances in Palaeontology of China (four times), and Top 10 Advances in Geological Science and Technology of China (twice). Several of his findings have been incorporated into textbooks both in China and abroad.
