A new “Golden Spike” settled in China: GSSP of the Wuliuan Stage and the Miaolingian Series, Cambrian
       Updatetime: 2018-08-01 Printer      Text Size:A A A

On June 21, the IUGS Executive Committee voted to ratify the GSSP proposal for the base of the Wuliuan Stage and Miaolingian Series, Cambrian as approved by the International Commission on Stratigraphy. The new GSSP in Jianhe, eastern Guizhou, is the 11th GSSP in China. The ratification also indicates the end of a 20-year dispute of the GSSP research on the Stage 5, Series 3, Cambrian, making China the country with the most GSSPs.

The research, led by Guizhou University, was completed by an international team with the members from 8 institutions including NIGPAS. This is the 9th GSSP that NIGPAS studied as leader or major participant.

The stratotype section is located at the Wuliu-Zengjiayan Section in the vicinity of Balang Village, Jianhe County, Guizhou Province, 108°24.830’ E, 26°4.843’N. The Global Boundary Stratotype Point is 52.8 m above the bottom boundary of the Kaili Formation, labeled by the first appearance of the trilobite species Oryctocephalus indicus. The names of the new stage and series are from Wuliu hillsides, the starting point of stratotype section and Miaoling Range in Guizhou Province, China.
