
I obtained my Ph.D. (2011) from Seoul National University, South Korea, trained as a carbonate sedimentologist by S. K. Chough, and continued my postdoctoral research there until 2012. I then returned to China and joined the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NIGPAS).
During my tenure at NIGPAS, I was funded multiple times by P. M. Myrow from the Colorado College to conduct collaborative research in the USA. From 2014 to 2017, I pursued postdoctoral research with I. P. Montañez at the University of California, Davis to learn sedimentary geochemistry and Earth System Science. In 2018 I returned to NIGPAS, where I now lead a research group focusing on deep-time sedimentary systems and paleo-environments.
I’ve been serving as the executive associate editor of Acta Sedimentologica Sinica, and editorial member of several journals including Sedimentary Geology and Journal of Palaeogeography. I am currently the vice-chair of Subcommission on Carboniferous Stratigraphy, and council member of the International Society of Palaeogeography and Chinese Association of Sedimentologists. Awarded the “Sun Shu Prize China” by the International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS) in 2024.
I engage in interdisciplinary research that integrates field sedimentology, sedimentary petrology, integrative stratigraphy, and sedimentary geochemistry, aiming to investigate Earth’s climate in deep time and co-evolution of life and environments. More Recently, my work has centered on the global carbon cycle and Earth's surface system during the Late Paleozoic Ice Age, the Earth’s penultimate icehouse.
