The Maokouan–Lopingian boundary sequences

Jin Yu-gan, Zhu Zi-li and Mei Shi-long

pp. 138-152, in English

Abstract:

Lopingian marine sequences are fully developed in South China. The Lopingian series consists of two stages: the Wuchiapingian and the Changhsingian Stage, of which each comprises two substages. A complete stratigraphic sequence from the Upper Maokouan to the Wuchiapingian boundary is well exposed in Laibin. The abundantly fossiferous beds contain representatives of most marine fossil groups, and evolutionary lineages within conodonts demonstrated its continuity of deposition. The appearance of Clarkina postbitteri coincides with a major depositional and faunal change of Permian Period and thus, is regarded as the most promising horizon for the Maokouan–Lopingian boundary.
